How can we protect our eyes from Delhi pollution?

Post-festival season, air quality in Delhi-NCR has deteriorated. Severe AQI levels have been recorded in a number of locations across the capital. It may come as a surprise to learn how many pollutants are present in the air we breathe. We frequently believe that these pollutants are harmful to our skin, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems. However, the pollution in our environment can also harm our eyes.

Contact with these pollutants on a daily and excessive basis may result in eye problems such as dryness, redness, and inflammation. In the midst of this, it is critical to protect one's eyes from polluted air. Here are some eye-protection tips:

While out, wear sunglasses

We have become accustomed to wearing masks as a result of the pandemic. However, because of the poor air quality, we must also protect our eyes. When we are outside, we must always wear sunglasses or eye protection. Face masks protect our lungs from pollution inhalation, while glasses or shades protect our eyes.

Use eye drops only after consulting with your doctor

A layer of moisture can protect our cornea from dryness, itching, pathogenic bacteria, and hazardous pollutants. Using eye drops on a regular basis helps keep your eyes healthy. However, it is critical to consult an eye specialist before using any eye drops to determine which are best for your eyes.

Do not rub your eyes

When exposed to pollution particles, the eyes become irritated. However, we must never rub our eyes under the influence of that sensation. Rubbing can aggravate pain and make your eyes feel burning or watery. Also, wash your hands or use a clean tissue or cloth to clean your eyes.

Stay indoors

People who are allergic to dust, have asthma or heart disease, or have serious medical issues should stay indoors when the AQI is low.
Practically, staying indoors is not an option because we all have professional and personal responsibilities that cannot be avoided. However, if the air quality is extremely poor or a public health alert is issued, try to stay indoors or work from home.

Air Purifier

Even if you are indoors, you are not immune to the effects of pollution. Install an air filter or purifier in your home to mitigate the effects. Also, try installing an air filter in your car and driving with your windows closed.

Make use of cold compressors

Using cooling compressors helps reduce eye irritation caused by air pollution. Try a cool compress, such as a clean cloth soaked in cold water, to relieve itching and inflammation of the eye. You could also use ice cubes wrapped in a clean cloth. Applying the cubes to your eyes can help relieve eye irritation.

Eye check-ups are a must

Never ignore an eye problem, especially if the air quality is poor. You must have regular eye exams to keep your eyes healthy. Also, if the dryness or irritation in your eyes persists for an extended period of time, you should seek immediate medical attention from an eye specialist.
